Our “WOW Factor” Buyer’s Guide

You want to eat sugar-free candy, but you're not sure which one is best for you.

It can be hard to find good sugar-free candy that doesn't taste like cardboard. Most of the time, when you're looking for sugar-free candy, you're either trying to cut down on your sugar intake or you have a food allergy.

You still have questions.  No problem.  We have answers.  Here are the most frequently asked questions about sugar-free candies and our answers to them.

Is sugar-free candy OK for weight loss?

If you're trying to lose weight, you might be wondering if sugar-free candy is a good option. Unfortunately, sugar-free candy isn't necessarily healthier than regular candy. In fact, it can actually end up causing weight gain.

Here's the deal: when you eat sugar-free candy, your body releases insulin in order to process the artificial sweeteners. This insulin release can lead to cravings and hunger, which can cause you to eat more overall and may lead to weight gain. In addition, sugar-free candy often contains calories from other sources (such as fat), so it's not really "calorie-free."

So if you're trying to lose weight, it's probably best to avoid sugar-free candy altogether (although there are some exceptions as you will see below).

What is the healthiest candy to snack on?

You might be surprised to know that there are a few different kinds of candy that can actually be considered healthy! Here are a few of our favorites:

Dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and has been shown to improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Make sure to choose a bar with at least 70% cocoa for the most health benefits.

Dried fruit is a great source of fiber and vitamins, and can satisfy your sweet tooth without all the sugar found in traditional candy. Try opting for natural, unsweetened varieties whenever possible.

Raw honey is loaded with nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It’s also been shown to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Just be sure to choose a variety that is pure, unprocessed honey for the best health benefits.

Is sugar-free candy healthier than regular candy?

It's tough to say whether sugar-free candy is healthier than regular candy, as it really depends on the ingredients used to make the sugar-free version.

Some sugar-free candies may use artificial sweeteners that could potentially be harmful, while others might use more natural sugar substitutes. That can make a big difference health-wise.

So, it really varies from brand to brand. In general, though, sugary treats should be consumed in moderation, no matter what form they come in.

What candy helps you to lose weight?

Candy may not be the first food that comes to mind when you think of losing weight, but there are actually some varieties that can help you slim down. Here are a few of the best options:

1. Dark Chocolate – Not only is dark chocolate delicious, but it also contains antioxidants that can help boost your metabolism. Antioxidants in cocoa can also help to decrease inflammation and improve Insulin sensitivity, both of which are important for weight loss. Choose a bar with at least 70% cacao for the most benefit.

2. Gummy Bears – Believe it or not, gummy bears can actually help you lose weight. They’re a great source of fiber, which keeps you feeling full longer and can help to reduce cravings. Opt for sugar-free gummy bears to get the most benefit.

The thing about gummy bears is that they are often used as a supplement full of vitamins and minerals and other good things. Finding healthy gummies isn't difficult any longer and is a great way to feed your sweet tooth while staying healthy at the same time.

Is there such a thing as healthy candy?

Yes, there is such a thing as healthy candy. However, not all candy is created equal. For example, some types of candy are made with high-quality and nutritious ingredients, while others are filled with processed sugars and artificial ingredients.

If you're looking for healthy candy options, try choosing brands that use real fruit juices, whole grain flours, and natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.

Also, be sure to read the ingredient list carefully to avoid any products that contain unhealthy additives or artificial colors and flavors.

How can I satisfy my sweet tooth in a healthy way?

If you're looking for a healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth, you don't have to go far - there are plenty of delicious and nutritious options out there! Here are a few of our favorites:

1. Fruits and berries. Fresh or frozen, these sweet snacks are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. And they're perfect for satisfying that sweet tooth!

2. Dark chocolate. Not all chocolate is created equal - dark chocolate contains health-promoting compounds like flavonoids and polyphenols. Choose a bar with at least 70% cacao content for the most benefits.

3. Natural sweetness boosters. Add a touch of sweetness to your food without resorting to processed sugar. Raw honey, pure maple syrup, and date sugar are all great options.

What is better for you fat free or sugar-free?

There is no simple answer to this question as it depends on a variety of factors, including your overall health, fitness goals, and dietary preferences.

In general, however, fat-free foods tend to be lower in calories than their sugary counterparts, making them a good choice for those trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Additionally, fat-free foods often contain less unhealthy saturated fats and trans fats than their full-fat versions.

That said, not all fat-free foods are created equal. Some processed fat-free foods may actually be higher in sugar than their full-fat versions (due to the added sugar used to compensate for the lack of fat flavor). So while they may be lower in overall calories, they may not be the best choice for those looking to cut down on sugar.

Ultimately, the best way to choose between fat-free and sugar-free foods is to read the nutrition labels carefully and make sure you're aware of all the ingredients used. Choose products that are made with whole, natural ingredients and avoid those that are processed or contain artificial sweeteners.

What sweets are OK for diabetics?

Here are three delicious sweets that are safe for diabetics to enjoy:

1. Olalla Sweet Shop Caramels: These caramels are made with brown rice syrup and evaporated cane juice, making them a low-glycemic treat.

2. Dream Pops sorbet pops: These dairy-free and gluten-free pops come in a variety of fun flavors like mango chili and strawberry basil. They're sweetened with agave nectar, which has a low glycemic index.

3. Fat Toad Farm Goat's Milk Caramel Sauce: This rich and creamy caramel sauce is made with goat's milk and sweetened with evaporated cane juice. It's perfect for spooning over ice cream or fresh fruit.

Our Best Advice

Looking for the best sugar-free candies? We’ve spent dozens of hours reading thousands of reviews on Amazon from verified customers to find the perfect Sugar Free Candies for your needs.   Here are a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, I recognize that this article is about the best sugar-free candy and nothing else.  But it's hard to talk about sugar-free hard candy without also talking about the health issues associated with it.  After all, this is a health and wellness blog so I'm going to assume that you are interested in a sugar-free option for health reasons.  With that in mind, there are two other things I want to get out of the way right from the start.

The first is that we all know (don't we) that sugar-free is not always healthy.  Sure it might be healthier (relatively speaking) than a sugar-full candy option but the sweetener options and alternatives are not always so good.  It truly is a case of the cure being worse than the sickness.  So keep that in mind (at least until now).

The second thing that I want to point out nowadays is that many people claim that there is no such thing as a "healthy" candy (especially hard candy).  It's an oxymoron, they claim.  But I disagree.  It's one of the big lessons I learned as a diabetic from the Atkins Center that all of my favorite snacks and candies can be made healthy using the right ingredients and still taste the same.  Healthy candy is no longer an oxymoron.  That isn't to say that you should over-indulge in candy but as a snack once in a while to satisfy a sweet tooth, there are low-carb, healthy options today.

With those two things in mind, that sugar-free may be worse than the original and that there is such a thing as healthy candy nowadays, let's talk about our options.  Sugar-free hard candies are certainly available.  You can also get sugar-free strawberry twists and assorted flavor jelly beans as well as dark chocolate candy (with more than 70% cacao).

There are options for chocolate and caramel lovers and candies feature dark chocolate and sweet milk chocolate.  There is a sugar-free treat for almost every taste nowadays.  There are bars full of creamy milk chocolate and peanut butter cups with creamy peanut butter filling as well as individually wrapped york peppermint patties (one of my favorites).

Most sugar-free candy or bars have half the calories (or even less) than their original counterpart.  Sugar-free treats boast of so many options that it boggles the mind why we didn't do this sooner.  Whether it is sugar-free versions of gourmet dark chocolate or a chocolate caramel mousse or a sugar peach gummy.  Rich dark chocolate and peanut butter cups are my favorites with half the calories but delicious fruit chews using high fructose corn syrup or the fruity flavor of lifesavers or sugar-free gum are also great options.

Jolly Rancher hard candy or individually wrapped candies like strawberry fruit chews and sugar-free Reese's cups can still be keto diet compatible candies.  Everything from cotton candy to caramel nut bars to the sweet flavor of America's favorite jelly bean and other classic style hard candy can be made today for the sugar-restricted diet and still maintain the delicious taste.

Of course, that begs the question of why we haven't done this sooner.  I am part of a generation that grew up on junk food and candy and we are now paying the price in diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Forget the COVID 19 pandemic for a moment and realize that we have a diabetes pandemic on our hands as well.  We have an entire generation with blood sugar problems and we need cholesterol-free options with low sugar alcohols.  We need to get rid of real sugar (especially cane sugar) and use healthy alternative ways to sweeten our palate.  And it's coming, slowly but surely.

Whether you like the individually wrapped caramels or the rich and pepperminty interior of chocolate peppermints or whether you prefer the caramel nut bar or Russell Stover Sugar-Free Candy, or whether you just prefer your jelly beans to snack on all day, they all come in a healthy package nowadays that surprises many people.

The Atkins Center has pioneered the movement but there are a lot of brands following suit and our supermarket aisles (at least in the first world) are full of yummy options.  Jelly beans, iced tea, chewing gum or fresh mint chocolate, and soft caramels, they are all available and all you have to do is choose.

With all of that being said, it is now time for us to reveal our top choice for the best of the best in sugar-free candy.  Drum roll, please...

Our #1 WOW Choice (and why)

The Best Sugar-Free Candies for YOU

Our No. #1 WOW Choice for the best sugar-free candies is ATKINS Endulge Chocolate Covered Candies for the best overall quality.  After all, if they are good for diabetics, they will be good for everyone else as well.  And the Atkins Center specializes in treating diabetes.  After all, Dr. Atkins literally wrote the book on the ketogenic diet for diabetics.

And I have to be honest here.  M&M chocolate candies are my all-time favorite candy.  I even named my two girls after them (Melanie & Michelle - just kidding!).  And, although Atkins can't call them M&M candies, they look exactly the same and they taste exactly the same.  The only difference is that they are healthy for you.

A crunchy, roasted peanut dipped in chocolate and a candy shell but containing only 150 calories per pouch and 1 gram of net carbs, makes these candies ideal for both diabetics and non-diabetics alike.  With only 1 gram of sugar per serving, you can enjoy your M&M guilt-free.

I hate to tell you this but Atkins has a number of candy and chocolate bar snacks that are healthy for you.  The problem will be limiting yourself to one or two per day.  Even healthy snacks can be too much if you are trying to lose weight.

We are impressed and I hope you are as well!  Remember to check prices and availability on Amazon by clicking the red button below each image.  As always, the trick is to get started today!
