First of all, the best protein bar for diabetics is a different thing than protein bars for pre or post-workout needs.  That's not to say that an athlete (or anyone else) couldn't benefit greatly from the health benefits of a ketogenic diet.  They most certainly would but that may simply not be on their radar at the moment.  Some people just want a healthy alternative to a candy bar.  Others want sugar-free protein bars or a gluten-free protein bar as a general rule since they see that as a healthy choice.

A diabetic wants low-carb protein bars most of all.  The best protein bars for diabetes is going to be low in carbs and sugar alcohols in order to protect blood sugars from spiking.  Snack bars for athletes are not necessarily a healthy snack bar for diabetics.  Some athletes may, in fact, be struggling with low blood sugar and need to eat sugary snack bars.  But bars for diabetes are different.  Not only can there not be any added sugar, it needs to be low sugar and low carb to quality.

Now comes an interesting observation.  We are a culture in transition in our understanding of the impact of a high-carb, high-sugar diet in the modern world.  I think we've learned the lesson about high sugar and high fat since everything is about being sugar-free and fat-free.

But there is a nuance in our understanding that is taking place right now as we speak.  We are beginning to realize that it isn't just about being sugar-free but being low in carbs.  Likewise, we are beginning to realize that it isn't just about being fat-free but rather about healthy vs. unhealthy fats.  In fact, a ketogenic diet for diabetics is a high protein and high-fat diet but low in carbs and sugars.  Healthy fat is good for you and helps you to lose weight.  There, I said it and I'm not sorry.

The problem is that many blogs and reviews still don't get it.  Many protein bar brands don't get it yet either.  They still talk about managing your blood sugar levels and making sure you don't have a sugar spike when you eat their protein bar.  That's good but it isn't enough.  That works if you are doing weight management and maintenance but it isn't enough if you are trying to lose weight (which most of us who are diabetics are trying to do).

With that kind of thinking, a snickers bar is good for you.  It doesn't cause a sugar spike since it is digested slowly due to the caramel and nougat center (as well as the peanuts).  It is one of my favorite candy bars in fact but that doesn't mean that I can eat it.  It has 10x more carbs than my daily allowance so if I eat a snickers bar, I can't eat ANYTHING ELSE for the next ten days.  In other words, it isn't just about spiking my sugar but about reducing the number of carbs I eat on a daily basis if I want to lose weight.

So when you look at the different protein bars on the market and they don't even tell you the net carb amount, you know something is wrong.  They say that it is keto-friendly but they don't tell you that it is low carb.  Keto-friendly could be nothing more than sugar-free for all you know.  That's not good enough.  Many brands don't know how to calculate net carbs and sugar alcohols for example.  They think it is about added sugar or low sugar and they treat it like snack bars that are only a hop, skip, and a jump from a candy bar.  It doesn't work that way.  Not for diabetics.

That's not to say that you can't have a bar that is made with chocolate chip cookie dough or eat chewy bars made with dark chocolate.  You can.  This is one of the things that I learned through the Atkins Center for Diabetes, that almost all of the sweet tooth cravings can be met with high-quality, low-carb alternatives that taste pretty well the same as the originals.  Sugar cravings be gone!  Energy bars like Fiber One Protein Bars or RX Bars don't have too many carbohydrates but taste great.

Even a normal granola bar is usually too full of maple syrup extract to be eaten by a diabetic but that can be changed.  Other ingredients can be used to make sure that your blood sugar level is protected.  Energy bars can be dairy-free, low carb, and low glycemic these days.  They can be full of natural ingredients that promote slow digestion for ultimate diabetes control.  Quest Nutrition has some interesting options these days and there are other bars out there as well.  The RX bar is doable although some have artificial sweeteners and others don't fit our dietary restrictions.

The number of grams of fiber is also important since most diabetics don't get enough fiber in their diet when following a ketogenic diet.  So the added protein is welcome but the added fiber is crucial.  We usually get enough protein just from our diet alone since we eat mostly protein-based foods garnished with a variety of high-fat ingredients.  So higher protein levels are not as important as the total carbohydrates in a bar.  After that, it is really about the amount of fiber in your favorite bars.

Whether you use a protein bar as a meal replacement or simply as a healthy snack to get to your next meal is up to you but when you find the right bar that tastes great and has a total carbohydrate count below 5 grams, then your only other problem is not to eat more than two per day.

The amount of protein and fiber per serving should be 10g or more each.  You should also get that protein and fiber from your diet by eating whole foods and egg whites and other sources of healthy protein and fats.  Some people are very concerned about maintaining low blood sugars as well they should but the best snack bars for diabetes will have very few sugar alcohols and therefore should not pose a threat.
