Our “WOW Factor” Buyer’s Guide

Protein bars are a great way to get in your daily protein, but they can be expensive and some of them taste pretty bad.

Most protein bars are either loaded with sugar or taste like cardboard. It's hard to find one that satisfies both your need for protein and good taste.

But you still have lots of questions.  No problem.  We have the answers.  Here are the most frequently asked questions about Protein Bars and our answers to them.

What is the most popular protein bar?

There is no one "most popular" protein bar. Protein bars come in all shapes and sizes, with a variety of different flavors and ingredients.

Some bars are made with mostly organic ingredients, while others are loaded with artificial flavors and sweeteners. Some are high in protein, while others have very few grams of protein per serving.

With that said, there are some popular bars that tend to be well-loved by many people.

The Clif Builder's Bar, for example, is a bar that is high in protein and contains mostly organic ingredients. It comes in a variety of flavors, including chocolate peanut butter, cookies 'n cream, and s'mores.

Another popular choice is the Vega Sport Performance Protein Bar, which is a plant-based protein bar that comes in flavors like chocolate peanut butter and cookies 'n cream.

But there are others as well, such as the Atkins line of products that are not only high-quality but specifically formulated for people on the ketogenic diet (after all, Dr. Atkins wrote the book on the ketogenic diet!).

What are the best-tasting protein bars?

The best-tasting protein bars are the ones that taste good AND have a good nutritional profile. Unfortunately, many bars that taste good are loaded with sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. And many bars that are good for you taste like cardboard.

But there are a few bars out there that manage to be both delicious and nutritious.

Our top pick for the best-tasting protein bar is the FULFIL Chocolate Salted Caramel Protein Bar. This bar is soft, chewy, and chocolatey, with a salty caramel flavor that will tantalize your taste buds.

It's also packed with 20 grams of protein and only has 210 calories, making it a great choice if you're watching your weight. Plus, it contains no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or colors.

What are the worst protein bars?

There are a lot of poor-quality protein bars on the market. Many of them are loaded with unhealthy ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup, trans fats, and artificial flavors and colors.

The worst protein bars are the ones that are high in sugar and calories and low in protein. Some of the worst offenders include brands like Snickers Protein Bars, Hershey's Protein Bars, and Balance Bar Dark Chocolate Mint.

If you're looking for a healthy and nutritious protein bar, I recommend choosing one that is low in sugar, high in protein and made with all-natural ingredients.

Do protein bars make you fat?

Protein bars are a popular snack food, but there is some debate about whether or not they can make you fat.

While protein bars are generally healthy and can help you reach your daily protein goals, some of them do contain a lot of calories and sugar, which could lead to weight gain if you're not careful.

To avoid gaining weight from protein bars, choose brands that have fewer than 200 calories per bar and don't contain any unhealthy fats or added sugars. You should also be sure to eat protein bars in moderation - even the healthier ones can add up quickly if you eat too many!

Do protein bars help you lose weight?

Some protein bars can help you lose weight, while others can actually hinder your weight loss efforts. The best protein bars for weight loss are those that are low in sugar and high in fiber.

Protein bars can be a great snack or meal replacement when you're trying to lose weight because they're filling and provide a good amount of protein. However, it's important to read the ingredients list carefully before purchasing a protein bar, as some brands are loaded with sugar and other unhealthy ingredients.

How many protein bars a day is too much?

This is a great question and one that doesn't have a straightforward answer. It depends on factors like your weight, activity level, and metabolism. Personally, I think two protein bars a day is the maximum amount you should eat.

The general rule of thumb is that you should be consuming 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight. So if you weigh 180 pounds, you would need 64 grams of protein per day. But keep in mind that this is just a baseline number and your individual needs may be higher or lower than this depending on things like your activity level and muscle mass.

What snack is high in protein?

There are a few snacks that are high in protein, which can be great for people who are looking to increase their intake of this nutrient.

Some high-protein snacks include nuts and seeds, nut butter, tofu, tempeh, and edamame. These foods are all relatively high in protein and can make a great addition to any diet.

Additionally, there are many different types of protein powders that can be used to make shakes or smoothies that are also high in protein. So, if you're looking for a snack that is high in protein, there are definitely plenty of options to choose from!

What are the side effects of protein bars?

Most protein bars are high in sugar and other unhealthy ingredients, which can cause a range of health problems.

For example, many protein bars are loaded with unhealthy added sugars that can lead to weight gain and other health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Many protein bars also contain unhealthy trans fats, which can increase your risk of heart disease.

Additionally, many protein bars are high in calories and low in nutritional value, meaning they won't do much to help you meet your dietary goals. So if you're looking for a healthy snack option, avoid most protein bars and choose something else instead.

Who should not eat protein bars?

Protein bars are a great way to get extra protein in your diet, but they're not for everyone. If you have celiac disease or are allergic to gluten, you should avoid protein bars because they typically contain gluten (although some are gluten-free).

Additionally, if you're trying to lose weight, you may want to avoid protein bars as they can be high in calories and sugar (although some are keto-friendly).

Finally, if you have kidney problems, you should talk to your doctor before eating protein bars because they can be high in phosphorus (although some are safe).

The issue is to know what you are looking for and not settle for anything less. A phosphorus-safe, keto-friendly protein that is gluten-free is available for those who are looking for them.

What is the best snack for weight loss?

The best snack for weight loss is a fruit or vegetable. When you're hungry, reach for a piece of fruit or some vegetables like celery, carrots, or cucumbers. These snacks are low in calories and high in nutrients, making them the perfect choice for people who are trying to lose weight.

But if you are on the ketogenic diet and are trying to lose weight, you may have to stay away from fruit (which has healthy sugars) and restrict your vegetables (which have healthy carbs).

Another good option is nuts. Nuts are a healthy source of protein and fiber, and they contain heart-healthy unsaturated fats. Just be sure to eat them in moderation because they are high in calories. A handful of nuts makes a great snack when you're on the go and are the best option for those on the ketogenic diet.

Why do protein bars taste bad?

There are a few reasons why protein bars might taste bad.

First, many protein bars contain a lot of sugar, which can make them taste overly sweet.

Second, some protein bars are made with low-quality ingredients that don't taste very good.

Finally, some people simply don't like the texture of protein bars and they compare them with normal chocolate bars. It is not a fair comparison in most cases but there is no accounting for taste!

Our Best Advice

Looking for the best-tasting protein bars? We’ve spent dozens of hours reading thousands of reviews on Amazon from verified customers to find the perfect Protein Bars for your needs.   Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Personally, I like the taste of protein bars.  There, I said it.  I know it isn't the same as a candy bar but I don't expect it to be.  Not all protein bars are created equal of course, which is why I am more focused on the ingredients than on the taste.

It isn't just about finding a pure protein bar.  I don't think I would like the taste of that (although I suppose it depends on the type of protein being used).  I do expect other ingredients and some sort of attempt at taste.

My favorite, of course, is peanut butter but I can live with a good dark chocolate almond as well.  But taste buds being what they are, my taste may not fulfill your taste requirements.  That is what makes an article like this so difficult to write.

But let's start with the healthy ingredients first and then we will get back to the issue of taste.  We can start with the protein and talk about brown rice protein or soy protein or whey protein isolate.  But there is also pea protein (for vegans) and milk protein isolate (unless you are lactose intolerant).  Most people think that soy protein isolate is the way to go but I prefer whey protein isolate myself.

So, for me, to start with, the best protein bars will not contain pea protein or soy protein isolate but rather whey protein.  That's the first step.  That's not to say that milk protein isolate or pea protein is any less good than whey protein, we are just talking here about personal taste (although whey protein has some great health benefits as well).

Secondly, I look at the other ingredients in the protein bar, both what is there and what is not there.  Obviously, I don't want any artificial sweeteners or added sugar, or trans fat.  But I am looking for delicious flavors (like chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate, or mint chocolate) but I am also open to their tastes like coconut nectar (since coconut is good for you).

I generally will only eat one bar per day but still the fewer carbs and sugar alcohols the better.  I am still concerned about blood sugar levels and zero grams of sugar is always the best way to go.  We can also talk about saturated fat, a low glycemic index, the benefits (or not) of vanilla extract and maple syrup, and dietary fiber but the real issue for me is simply whether or not it is low carb.

I realize that my needs as a diabetic go in one direction while other people may be looking for something completely different in a great-tasting protein bar.  For a diabetic, it is about finding a tasty meal replacement bar but for someone interested in using it as a pre or post-workout snack (or post-gym snack), they may be interested in a general nutrition bar with a good protein content for muscle growth that is full of amino acids.

They may or may not already be using a protein powder and therefore the protein bar is more about taste than the protein source. Saturated fat and natural sugar and healthy fats may be more important in that context than taste but each situation is different.

Some people are more interested in that it be gluten-free and soy-free while others are more concerned about saturated fat.  Some people are concerned about the protein source and are on a vegan diet.  They want a plant-based protein bar with no added sugar (or at least low sugar).  The protein blend may also be important since you can find protein bar picks that include different types of protein.  The protein blend bars are quite interesting and seem to be growing in popularity.

But the best protein bars are always the ones that you take regularly and that fulfill a need in your overall health regimen.  You have given up eating a candy bar for energy (since candy bars and birthday cake are unhealthy choices obviously) and you are more interested in brown rice, sea salt, and how much protein you can get into your daily protein bar indulgence.  That's not to say that the chocolate coating shouldn't taste great and contain dark chocolate chips (dark chocolate with over 70% cocoa is good for you).

And that's not to say that you would turn down a healthy protein bar with a good protein source that also tastes like mint chocolate or peanut butter chocolate or even coconut nectar.  Of course.  But still, dark chocolate is good for you but mint chocolate may not and that is a consideration.  Dark chocolate almond butter is an interesting option but my favorite is always peanut butter (although I haven't found a good dark chocolate almond butter protein bar yet).

My focus has been on pumpkin seeds, sea salt, egg whites, and sunflower seeds rather than on taste.  The quest bar was an option at one point but it has too much saturated fat.  In the end, I know that dark chocolate chip is healthy and almond butter is healthy and some sort of combination of the two is the way to go.

As you can tell, personal taste is....well, personal and I can only give you my sense of what is both healthy and great tasting in a protein bar.  So, for me, I would go for a whey protein bar that has either a dark chocolate chip or almond butter taste (or both) that is low in carbs.

That combo is something that I can live with as a diabetic who is trying to lose weight.  If you are simply interested in a healthy after-gym snack, you can experiment with the different options until you find something that you like (but the dark chocolate chip is always a favorite).

With all of that being said, it is now time to reveal our top choice for the best of the best-tasting protein bars on the market.  Drum roll, please...
