Our “WOW Factor” Buyer’s Guide

You're a runner, and you want to take your performance to the next level.

But you don't know where to start when it comes to supplements. Do you need protein? Creatine? Electrolytes?

We've got you covered. Our list of the best supplements for runners will help you choose the right ones for your needs and goals.  But you still have questions.  No problem.  We have answers.

Here are the most frequently asked questions about supplements for runners and our answers to them.

Which supplements are best for runners?

As a runner, it’s important to make sure you are getting the right vitamins and minerals in order to maintain your health. Unfortunately, many runners do not get enough of these key nutrients from their diet alone. This is where supplements can help. Here are some of the best supplements for runners:

Iron: One of the most common nutrient deficiencies among runners is iron. This is particularly true for women, who lose iron during menstruation. Low iron levels can lead to fatigue and decreased performance. The best way to get more iron is from food sources such as red meat, dark leafy greens, and beans. However, some runners may still need to take an iron supplement to meet their needs.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is important for bone health and can also help improve muscle function. Many runners are deficient in vitamin D, which can lead to fatigue and an increased risk of injury. The best way to get more vitamin D is from exposure to sunlight. However, some runners may still need to take a supplement to meet their needs.

Other ingredients include Vitamin A for eyesight, Vitamin C and E for immune health, Omega 3 fatty acids, and a Probiotic for digestive health.

More specifically, there are supplements that focus specifically on joint and bone health and others that will help increase endurance, energy, and recovery. Getting the right mix of supplements for your particular needs is the strategy you need to follow.

What supplements improve running endurance?

There are a few different supplements that can help improve running endurance.

First, consider adding a beta-alanine supplement to your diet. Beta-alanine has been shown to increase carnosine levels in muscles, which can help buffer lactic acid and improve exercise performance.

Second, try taking caffeine before your runs. Caffeine has been shown to improve endurance and stamina by providing a boost of energy.

Finally, consider taking a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplement before or during your runs. BCAA's can help reduce muscle fatigue and enhance recovery after intense exercise.

Do I need supplements for running?

It depends on what you're looking for in a supplement.

A lot of runners do take supplements, but the most important thing to remember is that no supplement can replace a good diet.

There are a few key supplements that runners may want to consider taking: protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium.

Protein is essential for repairing muscle damage after a run; iron is necessary for transporting oxygen throughout the body.

Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation and calcium helps keep bones strong.

If you're looking for a general all-around supplement to improve your health and performance, a multivitamin/mineral supplement would be a good choice.

Should a runner take creatine?

It depends on the runner's goals. Creatine is a supplement that can help improve power and performance during high-intensity exercise. It can also help people build muscle mass, but it is not essential for runners.

If a runner is looking to improve their performance and wants to try creatine, they should speak with a doctor or registered dietitian to see if it is right for them. There are some risks associated with taking creatine, so it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting supplementation.

What supplements are good to take after a run?

There are a few different kinds of supplements that can be beneficial after a run.

First, something to replenish energy levels and electrolytes lost during the exertion. A sports drink or an energy gel can help with this.

Secondly, something to reduce inflammation and soreness. There are a number of different options here, but one option is to take a turmeric supplement.

Finally, it can be helpful to take a probiotic supplement to support gut health and immunity, both of which can be compromised after intense exercise.

Which vitamin improves stamina?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the amount of stamina that particular vitamin or nutrient can improve will vary depending on the person.

However, some vitamins and nutrients that are known to improve stamina include B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Which protein powder is best for runners?

There is no simple answer to this question, as there are a variety of protein powders on the market, and each one has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Some protein powders may be better suited for runners than others, depending on the individual's specific needs and goals.

Some things to keep in mind when choosing a protein powder include the type of protein (whey, casein, soy, etc.), the amount of protein per serving, the calorie content, and any added ingredients.

Whey protein is a good option for runners because it is quickly absorbed by the body and can help promote muscle growth and recovery.

Casein protein takes longer to digest and may be beneficial for runners who are looking to maintain their muscle mass.

Soy protein is a good option for vegetarians or vegans, and pea protein is a good option for those with allergies or sensitivities to dairy or soy.

Are BCAAs good for runners?

Yes, BCAAs are great for runners. They provide energy and help to rebuild muscle tissue.

During a run, your muscles use up glycogen (a type of sugar) for energy. This can leave your muscles tired and depleted after a run. BCAAs can help to prevent this by providing an alternate source of energy during a run.

They can also help to rebuild muscle tissue that is broken down during a run. This can help you to recover faster after a run and improve your performance in future runs.

Our Best Advice

Looking for the best supplements for runners? We’ve spent dozens of hours reading thousands of reviews on Amazon from verified customers to find the perfect runner’s supplement for your needs.   Here are a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, it needs to be said that this is a difficult article to write because there is more than one way to look at it.  On the one hand, runners need ALL of the supplements that we mention in our blog.  A good multivitamin/multimineral is obviously the place to start.  But there is also good reason to take something specifically for joint health.  In addition, endurance, energy, and speed of recovery are also key issues for runners and there are good supplements that can help you with that as well.  So which one is really BEST when all three are useful?  Good question.

On the other hand, a good multivitamin/multimineral (preferably with Omega 3 and Probiotics) is a good place for everyone to start.  So if you are looking for a general approach to health for runners and focused on where to begin, that is the obvious choice.  But if you are looking for something specific for joint health or endurance, that would require different supplements.

I think that it is safe to say that MOST runners (whether professional or just for the pleasure of running) can be considered endurance athletes.  Unless you are specifically training for sprints or the 400-yard baton race, you are probably more focused on endurance rather than fast energy that dissipates just as fast.

That focus is also very important for your diet.  Endurance runners usually follow a ketogenic diet and burn ketones for long-term running performance.  A sprint runner will generally bulk up on carbs the day before a race in order to get immediate energy that will barely last until the end of the race.  So, we will assume that you are following a ketogenic diet for running performance because you are part of that group of endurance athletes that makes up the majority of runners out there.

Muscle growth is not necessarily the focus either and you are probably not involved in a lot of weight training.  Long-distance runners, especially, are more interested in cardio than strength training.  They are more interested in a recovery supplement to reduce muscle soreness than in the need to lose weight.

They need running supplements that have vitamin C for the immune system, they eat calcium-rich foods for bone health, they drink green tea extract as part of a healthy diet, and they are concerned about their vitamin d status and iron deficiency.  They are interested in enhancing running performance, taking calcium supplements, iron supplements, protein supplements, and eating the proper nutrients for their digestive system.

Athletic performance matters and therefore getting the right branched-chain amino acids to reduce muscle weakness (as well as lactic acid) and give them a performance boost is important.  A good protein shake to improve blood flow and reduce muscle breakdown is more important than body weight and protecting themselves from free radical damage and oxidative damage in the long run.  Getting enough protein with omega 3 fatty fish amino acids will give them aerobic power and improve performance.

Protein intake alone is not enough, though, and they also need to think about the best recovery supplement to take for muscle recovery, protein synthesis, protecting lean muscle mass, and protecting their bones from stress fractures.  Muscle contraction after a long run is also an issue in muscle recovery and stress fractures can cause longer-term damage than muscle contraction.  Protein synthesis is therefore important, as well as lactic acid levels, and more red blood cells to carry nutrients to the muscles after a workout.

All the vitamins are good but there are important vitamins specific to marathon training and physical performance in general.  Vitamin A for eyesight.  Vitamin D for bone health.  Vitamin C and Vitamin E for immune health.  Healthy immune cells will defend your body from a number of potential threats.  Taking minerals for your iron deficiency will also be important (a simple blood test can tell you whether or not you are deficient).  Even beneficial bacteria for digestive health should be part of the right running supplements.

In addition, many runners are vegan and are committed to an omnivorous diet which means that they have to supplement b complex and other vitamins and minerals found largely in animal meat products.  A good running supplement or different kinds of recovery supplements may be just what your running coach ordered but you are still responsible to understand what you need to do to protect your cardiovascular health and immune system.

A good running coach would want you to be as knowledgeable as they are in this area.  You can start by understanding what the best supplements for runners are and how they will affect your performance and immune system over the long run.  The supplements runners should use start with a good multivitamin/multimineral blend and then goes up from there.

With all of that being said, it is now time for us to reveal our top choice for the best of the best in running supplements.  Drum roll, please...
