Our “WOW Factor” Buyer’s Guide

People are often unsure about what Chamomile Tea is and how it can help them.

Chamomile Tea has been enjoyed for centuries for its many health benefits. It is a natural relaxant that can help you get a good night's sleep, ease anxiety and stress, and soothe upset stomachs.

Here are the most frequently asked questions about Chamomile Tea and our answers to them.

What type of chamomile is best?

There are two main types of chamomile - German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) and Roman or English chamomile (Chamaemelum Nobile). Both varieties can be used medicinally, but German chamomile is thought to be slightly more potent.

Chamomile tea made with fresh or dried Flowers is the most common way to consume this herb, although capsules and tinctures are also available.

When it comes to choosing the best type of chamomile, there is no single answer as different people may have different opinions. It really depends on your personal preferences. Some people prefer German chamomile for its stronger flavor, while others find Roman chamomile to be more soothing.

It's really a matter of personal preference, so we suggest trying both types to see which you like best.

What are the health benefits of drinking chamomile tea?

Chamomile Tea is thought to have many health benefits, including helping with anxiety, insomnia, and digestion.

Some studies have shown that chamomile tea can help to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. It is thought to work by increasing levels of a chemical called serotonin in the brain, which has a calming effect.

Chamomile tea has also been traditionally used as a remedy for insomnia. The herb's calming effect can help to ease anxiety and promote relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep.

Chamomile tea is also thought to be helpful for digestion. The herb's anti-inflammatory properties may help to soothe an upset stomach and relieve cramping.

Is it OK to drink chamomile every day?

Chamomile tea is a great choice for a bedtime tea because it helps to relax the nervous system and can be mildly sedating. It's also a good choice if you're experiencing tension headaches or anxiety. Chamomile is an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Most people find chamomile tea to be soothing and enjoy drinking it regularly. However, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, please check with your healthcare provider before consuming chamomile as there is some concern that it may cause uterine contractions. Also, if you're allergic to ragweed, you may also be allergic to chamomile.

Why you should not drink chamomile tea?

Chamomile tea is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women, as it can cause uterine contractions.

It's also not recommended for people with allergies to ragweed, as chamomile is a member of the ragweed family.

Finally, chamomile tea may interact with certain medications, so it's always best to speak with a healthcare professional before incorporating chamomile into your diet.

What are the side effects of chamomile tea?

Chamomile tea is made from the dried flower heads of the plant Camellia sinensis. Chamomile has been used medicinally for centuries and is thought to be a relaxant. Chamomile tea may provide some health benefits, but there are also some potential side effects to be aware of.

When taken in moderation, chamomile tea is generally considered safe. However, it can cause an allergic reaction in some people. If you experience any allergic symptoms after taking chamomile tea, such as hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing, discontinue use and see your doctor immediately.

Chamomile tea can also interact with certain medications, so it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional before adding it to your diet.

Possible side effects of chamomile tea include:

- Allergic reactions

- Interactions with medications

- Upset stomach

- Diarrhea

- Vomiting

- Nausea

But all of these side effects are for specific or rare cases. Chamomile tea is considered safe for use by healthy adults and older children.

Does chamomile tea really work?

There is some scientific evidence that chamomile tea can be effective in treating insomnia and anxiety. One study found that chamomile tea was just as effective as Russian valerian root extract in reducing symptoms of insomnia. Another study found that chamomile tea was helpful in reducing anxiety levels. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings.

Does chamomile tea make you poop?

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that chamomile tea makes you poop. However, chamomile tea is a natural laxative and can help to ease constipation.

Chamomile tea also has other health benefits, such as reducing inflammation and helping to calm the mind and relax the body. So, if you are looking for a way to improve your digestion and get relief from constipation, chamomile tea may be a good option for you.

What does chamomile do to the brain?

Chamomile does a few different things to the brain. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which help protect the brain from age-related damage. It also helps promote relaxation and calmness, which can be helpful for people with anxiety or insomnia. Lastly, chamomile may improve cognitive function and memory, especially in seniors.

Can chamomile cause anxiety?

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is a dried flower that can be found pre-packaged at most health food stores. When brewed as a tea, chamomile is thought to be a relaxant, and can be helpful in restoring insomnia, and decreasing generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Chamomile tea has been enjoyed for these benefits since the ancient Egyptians. However, some people report that drinking chamomile tea can cause anxiety.

How could something that is supposed to reduce anxiety actually cause it? Chamomile works by binding to receptors in the brain that are responsible for inducing sleepiness and relaxation. But everyone’s brains are different, so for some people, chamomile may have the opposite effect and actually increase anxiety levels. If you find that drinking chamomile tea makes you feel more anxious, it’s best to discontinue use and speak to your doctor.

When should I drink chamomile tea?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question since everyone's preferences and needs are different.

However, many people find that drinking chamomile tea before bedtime helps them relax and get a good night's sleep.

Others like to drink it first thing in the morning as a way to start their day off on a calm and relaxed note.

There are also many people who enjoy sipping on chamomile tea throughout the day as needed in order to manage stress levels and promote relaxation.

Ultimately, it's up to you to experiment and see what works best for you. Chamomile tea is generally safe for most people to consume, so there's no harm in trying it out at different times of day to see what works best for you.

Our Best Advice

Looking for the best chamomile tea? We’ve spent dozens of hours reading thousands of reviews on Amazon from verified customers to find the perfect Chamomile Tea for your needs. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, it needs to be said that the history of Chamomile tea is very interesting indeed.  The ancient Egyptians grew these flowers on the shores of the Nile River thousands of years ago and recognized their benefits to soothe the mind and the stomach at the same time.  Modern-day medicine is just now catching up to what people have known for years when it comes to the benefits of Chamomile Tea.

And, apparently, there are two basic types of Chamomile Tea - the German strain and the Roman strain.  The German strain is thought to be a bit stronger and the Roman (or English) strain a bit smoother.  Both have all of the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits that make Chamomile Tea a great choice even today.

You can also choose to take this tea in the form of tea bags (which are the most common) or as a loose-leaf tea.  Some people simply like the idea of using a sive that they place on top of their tea cup with a loose-leaf tea and pour hot water on it to get that fresh cup of tea that they so enjoy.

In Latin America, especially Uruguay and Argentina, we use a gourd and metal straw and place the loose-leaf tea in the gourd and pour the hot water on top of it.  Before the pandemic, we would normally share this gourd and tea (yerba mate) with our guests but, nowadays, that is too risky.

You can also choose to drink only organic chamomile tea regardless of whether you like to use a tea bag or loose-leaf tea.  Organic chamomile tea isn't so much about better taste as better quality.  Herbal teas, in general, are always grown organically nowadays but it is always good to check to make sure.

Some people swear by pure chamomile tea but it isn't clear whether that is a marketing angle or whether there really is such a thing as pure chamomile tea.  A chamomile tea brand normally doesn't add anything to their loose-leaf teas or tea bags, so they are pure by default.  That doesn't stop some brands such as London Pure Chamomile Tea from using the concept of purity in their branding.  Bagged tea or loose-leaf tea is already pure chamomile with nothing added.

To say that it is gluten-free or caffeine free is not saying very much since the pure chamomile flowers don't contain caffeine in the first place.  This isn't normal tea, after all, but rather a herbal tea.

Drinking tea is a wonderful tradition and a delicious cup of tea is as much about the experience as it is about the taste or the health benefits.  A good tea company understands that it is selling also the experience of drinking a soothing cup of tea.  A tea company today knows that Egyptian Chamomile in all organic tea bags is the way to go although they don't talk much about the difference between the Roman and German Chamomile strains.  Apparently, that is only for the tea connoisseur.

Egyptian Chamomile with the Roman Chamomile strain is probably the more common one but Chamomile tea brands have learned to promote tea bags, bagged tea, and loose leaf tea from the same chamomile flowers.  Chamomile tea brands love to talk about Egyptian Chamomile because it evokes images of the ancient Egyptians and a natural lotus flavor evokes thoughts of royalty and status.

We can talk about some of the great tastes that come from the chamomile flower such as honey vanilla chamomile or chamomile flavor with notes of orange peel or apple flavor or honey flavors.  But taste is a very personal thing and, although I prefer the apple-like flavor others may prefer only the great chamomile flavor.

At the end of the day, these medicinal herbs are not just about taste but about the effects, it has on people who have trouble sleeping.  Chamomile relaxes the nerves and soothes the mind and provides improved sleep quality.  There are a number of natural herbs that have health benefits and modern science is only now catching up to what people have experienced for centuries.  The Chamomile flower has been recognized for its benefits in dealing with stomach pain and digestive health as well.  And the great flavor and same taste have served people for a long time.

When it comes to tea products, you can choose loose leaf chamomile or k cup pods from the Keurig machine or just use normal chamomile tea bags.  That's up to you.  It is also a cultural issue since we mostly use the loose-leaf version in Latin America (or at least the Southern Cone).  Some people swear by their favorite chamomile tea brand such as celestial seasonings herbal tea (which is admittedly in the top 10) but the best chamomile tea brand is as personal as the taste you are looking for.  It is best to experiment a little to find what works best for you.

That also goes for whether you use loose-leaf tea or something that includes multiple tea bags.  You can also choose certified organic tea (certified organic is always good) or only the best tea quality available on the market.  The point is that black tea is not your only choice.

That is generally a stronger tea than chamomile and it is difficult to have multiple cups a day when there is a significant caffeine content as well.  Much better to try loose-leaf chamomile that is USDA-certified organic and gluten-free that soothes the body and mind no matter how much you drink it every day.

With all of that being said, it is now time for us to reveal our top choice for the best chamomile tea on the market today.  Drum roll, please...
