Our “WOW Factor” Buyer’s Guide

Lion's Mane supplements are a great way to improve your cognitive function, but there is a lot of confusion about them.

There are a lot of different Lion's Mane supplements on the market, and it can be hard to figure out which one is right for you.

Here are the most frequently asked questions about Lion’s Mane Supplements and our answers to them.

What is the supplement lion’s mane good for?

There are a number of purported benefits of lion’s mane, a supplement derived from the mushroom of the same name.

Some people believe that it can improve cognitive function, memory, and concentration, as well as alleviate anxiety and depression.

Additionally, some proponents claim that lion’s mane can help boost energy levels and immunity, and even promote hair growth.

Although there is anecdotal evidence to support these claims, scientific research on the effects of lion’s mane is still in its early stages. A few small studies have shown that it may indeed have some cognitive-enhancing effects, but more research is needed to confirm these findings.

What’s the best way to take lion’s mane?

There is no one “best” way to take lion’s mane, as the method that works best for you may vary depending on your individual preferences and needs. However, some ways of taking lion’s mane include brewing it into a tea, adding it to soups or stews, using it in smoothies, or taking it in capsule form.

Does lion’s mane have negative effects?

No, Lion’s Mane does not have any negative effects.

In fact, it has a wide range of potential health benefits! Lion’s mane is an edible mushroom that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is only recently that Western science has begun to explore its potential therapeutic applications.

So far, studies have shown that lion’s mane can boost cognitive function and memory, improve digestion, reduce inflammation, and even help fight cancer. There are still many questions to be answered about how exactly lion’s mane works and what dosage is best for different conditions, but the evidence so far is very promising.

How long does it take for Lion’s Mane to work?

It can take up to 12 weeks for the full effects of Lion’s Mane mushroom supplements to be noticeable.

Lion’s mane mushrooms have been found to help improve cognitive function, memory, and nerve signaling. They are also effective in treating anxiety and depression.

Does lion’s mane affect testosterone?

There is some preliminary research that suggests that Lion's Mane mushroom may help to improve testosterone levels, but further research is needed to confirm these findings.

In one study, rats who were given a specific compound found in lion's mane mushrooms showed an increase in testosterone levels.

However, the same study also showed a decrease in cortisol levels (cortisol is a hormone that is released in response to stress).

More research is needed to determine whether or not Lion's Mane mushroom has any direct effects on testosterone levels in humans.

What does lion’s mane make you feel like?

Imagine if you could take all the nootropic supplements in the world. A little bit scary, no? Now imagine if, instead of having to worry about the long-term damage they might cause, these nootropics not only supported your long-term health but actually improved it.

This is what Lion's Mane does. It enhances cognitive function while simultaneously promoting nerve growth and regeneration. So not only will it make you feel more alert and focused, but it will also help your brain to age gracefully.

Lion's Mane is a powerful cognitive enhancer because it contains compounds known as hericystins and erinacines. These compounds stimulate the growth of new nerve cells and promote the formation of new connections between nerve cells.

What happens if you take too much lion’s mane?

There haven't been any adverse effects reported from taking too much lion's mane, but it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement.

Lion's mane is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, but as with any other supplement, it's possible to experience side effects like stomach upset or diarrhea.

What time of day should I take Lion’s Mane?

Lion’s mane is best taken in the morning or early afternoon because it can cause drowsiness if taken later in the day.

Lion’s mane extract contains compounds that stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF), which is important for maintaining healthy neurons and cognitive function. NGF levels naturally decline with age, so taking lion’s mane supplements can help to keep your mind sharp as you get older.

It’s a good idea to start with a lower dose and gradually increase it over time until you find the amount that works best for you. Lion’s mane supplements are available in capsule or powder form, so you can choose the type that suits you best.

Can lion’s mane cause anxiety?

There is no scientific evidence that lion's mane mushroom can cause anxiety. However, any new or unusual food (or supplement) can cause some people to feel anxious, especially if they are not used to eating that type of food.

So it's possible that someone who has never eaten lion's mane mushrooms before could experience some mild anxiety after eating them. But there is no reason to believe that lion's mane mushrooms would cause any more anxiety than any other type of mushroom you would use in a salad.

What does lion’s mane do to the brain?

Lion’s mane mushroom has been shown to have various nerve-health promoting properties, including the promotion of nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis and the inhibition of beta-amyloid aggregation, both of which are implicated in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.

Lion’s mane has also been shown to improve cognitive function and memory in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as in healthy humans. One study showed that a single dose of lion’s mane extract was able to improve cognitive function and working memory performance in healthy middle-aged adults.

Our Best Advice

Looking for the best Lion’s Mane supplement? We’ve spent dozens of hours reading thousands of reviews on Amazon from verified customers to find the perfect Lion’s Mane supplement for your needs.   Here are a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, mushrooms?  Really?

When I think of mushrooms, either I am thinking of those harmless, tasty treats I get in my salads or the brain-altering ones they talk about in the movies (no personal experience there, believe me!).

But these mushrooms are somewhere in the middle.  Not necessarily so tasty and not entirely brain-altering in the psychedelic sense but still VERY healthy for you and your brain.

And the fact that there is practically no downside to taking them, neither in the short term nor the long term.  No side effects only positive effects on your memory, focus, immune system, and liver.

What more could you want in a supplement? Not a wonder cure, perhaps, but still quite wonderful.  I'm not sure that I would ever stop taking lion's mane as I grow older.

The trick is to learn everything you can about these lion's mane mushrooms. Apparently, it is a mushroom that grows on large leafy plants and looks a bit like a lion's mane.

A good lion's mane supplement would, no doubt, use organic lion's mane mushrooms to start with.  I suppose that a lion's mane mushroom extract would be used to make lion's mane powder to deal with brain fog and improve brain function.

It would have to be gluten-free and USDA-certified organic (as well as soy-free, dairy-free, and non-GMO) to even start to qualify as brain food for me. Of course, it would also have to be third-party tested and nut free as well (did I say certified organic?).

Organic lion's mane mushroom can support mood, cognitive functioning, neuronal health, and the aging process in general with the only downside possibly being an upset stomach on occasion (although I have a strong stomach) and itchy skin (which I already have) so the health benefits certainly outweigh any potential problems.   I am more worried about cognitive decline and cognitive impairment than anything else at my age.

Of course, talk to your health practitioner to find out if a mushroom extract (with beta-glucans and other active compounds) is right for you.  Lion's mane products are popular among mature adults for their nervous system support as well as their ability to support brain health.

Mushroom powder that is USDA-certified organic and gluten-free is probably one of the best lion's mane mushroom supplements made from real mushrooms to support nerve growth factor which improves the brain and nervous system both.

A good lion's mane product, it seems to me, would be based on lion's mane mushroom extract and come as a lion's mane capsule supplement or lion's mane powder.

I prefer the lion's mane powder over the lion's mane supplement (capsule) since I don't like swallowing pills.  Besides the lion's mane powder can be sprinkled on salads, used in shakes and smoothies, and taken with a glass of hot water.

The best lion's mane powder would be gluten-free so, as a diabetic, I don't have to worry about that either.  The benefits of Lion's Mane are clear, now the only thing left to do is get the hot water ready!

With all of that being said, it is now time for us to reveal our top choice in the best of the best of lion's mane supplementation.  Drum roll, please...
