Our “WOW Factor” Buyer’s Guide

You're looking for a dairy-free protein powder that meets your needs, but you don't know where to start.

Protein powders are a great way to get the nutrients your body needs, but not all protein powders are created equal. Many of them contain dairy, which can make them difficult to digest and unsuitable for those with allergies or dietary restrictions.

But you still have questions.  No problem.  We have answers.  Here are the most frequently asked questions about Dairy Free Protein Powder and our answers to them.

What is the healthiest non-dairy protein powder?

There are many plant-based protein powders on the market these days, and they all have different health benefits. Some of the most popular vegan protein powders are made from hemp, rice, pea, and soy. However, my personal favorite is a powder made from pumpkin seeds.

Pumpkin seed protein powder is high in fiber and antioxidants, and it's also a good source of vitamins and minerals including zinc, magnesium, and potassium.

It has a mild flavor that mixes well with smoothies and other beverages, and it doesn't have any controversial ingredients like soy or dairy. Plus, pumpkin seed protein powder is affordable and readily available online or in stores.

Is whey protein OK on a dairy-free diet?

No. Whey protein is a dairy product, so it is not safe for people who are allergic to dairy or who are following a dairy-free diet.

There are many plant-based protein powders that are available for people who can't have dairy products. Pea protein, rice protein, and hemp protein are all good choices.

You can also get adequate protein from a well-rounded diet that includes animal sources of protein, such as chicken, fish, eggs, and beans. Talk to your doctor or allergist if you have questions about which foods you should avoid if you have a dairy allergy.

Does all protein powder have dairy?

No, not all protein powders have dairy.

However, many do because milk is a common source of protein. There are also plant-based protein powders available that don't contain dairy.

When looking for a protein powder, it's important to read the ingredient list to make sure there are no dairy products included. If there are any dairy products in the powder, it's best to avoid them since some people are lactose intolerant and can't digest milk proteins properly.

Why is pea protein better than whey?

There are a few reasons why pea protein is often seen as a better option than whey.

For one, pea protein is dairy-free, making it a great choice for those with allergies or sensitivities. It's also high in fiber, which can help to regulate digestion. And unlike whey, pea protein is vegan-friendly.

But perhaps the biggest benefit of all is that pea protein is less allergenic than other forms of protein. It's been shown to be gentler on the stomach, making it a good option for those who have trouble digesting dairy or other types of protein.

Is whey protein inflammatory?

Yes, whey protein can be inflammatory.

This is because it contains high levels of the amino acid cysteine, which can increase the production of inflammatory molecules called cytokines. However, this problem can be solved by choosing a whey protein that is lower in cysteines, such as casein or soy protein.

What is non-dairy protein?

Non-dairy protein is a plant-based protein that does not come from an animal. There are many different types of non-dairy proteins, but some of the most common are soy, pea, and rice.

Non-dairy proteins are a good option for people who want to avoid dairy or for people who have allergies or sensitivities to dairy. They are also a good option for vegetarians and vegans.

Non-dairy proteins are typically lower in calories and fat than animal-based proteins, but they can be just as nutritious. They are a good source of protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients.

Does whey trigger lactose intolerance?

Whey protein is a dairy product and therefore contains lactose.

However, many people with lactose intolerance can still eat whey protein without any problems. This is because whey protein is a relatively small and fast-digesting protein, and the body can usually digest it without any problems.

In fact, studies have shown that whey protein may even help improve symptoms of lactose intolerance.

How do you get protein if you are gluten and dairy free?

You can get plenty of protein without gluten or dairy. In fact, there are many delicious and healthy protein-rich foods that are gluten and dairy free.

Some of the best sources of protein for people who are gluten and dairy-free include beans, lentils, chickpeas, nuts, seeds, tofu, tempeh, and seitan.

There are also many great high-protein grain alternatives available, such as quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat groats, and oats.

And for dessert lovers out there, don't worry - there are plenty of delicious high-protein vegan desserts that are gluten and dairy free too!

Is almond milk considered dairy?

No. Almond milk is not considered dairy because it does not come from a mammal.

Dairy products are milk, cheese, kefir, yogurt, ice cream, butter, and cream. All of these items come from the mammary glands of cows, goats, sheep, etc.

Which dairy-free protein powder is best for weight loss?

There are a number of great dairy-free protein powders on the market these days. Some of my favorites include hemp protein, pea protein, and pumpkin seed protein. All of these powders are high in fiber and healthy fats, which can help to boost weight loss results.

To make the most out of your dairy-free protein powder, be sure to combine it with healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This will help to ensure that you're getting all of the essential nutrients your body needs while still losing weight.

Our Best Advice

Looking for the best dairy-free protein powder? We’ve spent dozens of hours reading thousands of reviews on Amazon from verified customers to find the perfect dairy-free protein powder for your needs.   Here are a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, let's be clear about what the problem is.  On the one hand, whey protein is probably the most popular protein source used in the marketplace for pre and post-workout powders (or weight loss powders).  It is a dairy product since it is a byproduct of making cheese (from milk).  Both vegans and lactose intolerant/sensitive people are looking for an alternative.

On the other hand, for many people (but not all) who are only sensitive to lactose, whey protein still works.  It is gentle on the stomach and is absorbed quickly and efficiently by the body.  A little bit of experimentation will tell you whether or not your body can handle the whey protein or not.

But why bother?  Frankly, there are some VERY interesting vegan options (and therefore, by definition, dairy-free options) on the market today that, in my opinion, are healthier and tastier than whey protein.  And, for some reason, many brands seem to like to throw in a lot of healthy ingredients to make it even more enticing.  The more the better in my opinion.  So, consider your search for a dairy-free option an opportunity to get something even better than what you expected.

Having said that, we will look at different types of vegan protein powder that come from plant-based protein sources.  Whether you like brown rice protein, organic pea protein, or sunflower seed protein, you are still opting for a high-quality protein powder.  You are not restricted to a whey protein concentrate or a bone broth protein powder or even some type of egg protein powder.

That's not to say that beef protein isolate or egg white protein powder and other protein powders that come from an animal source can't also be dairy free.  Many of them are.  And if you are interested in animal sources of protein powder that is dairy free, there are several options open to you.

But in this article, we are trying to kill two birds with one stone by choosing a vegan protein blend for those on a vegan diet while at the same time fulfilling the need of lactose intolerant or sensitive dieters.  My point is that whey protein isolate isn't the only type of animal protein out there that is also dairy free.  Milk protein is one thing but not the only thing available.

At the same time, I am also saying that an organic fermented pea protein is heads and shoulders above any of the other animal-based protein supplements out there but not for being dairy free.  But because the protein content of plant-based proteins is simply superior.

Whether we talk about casein protein or pea protein isolate or brown rice as the source of your protein shakes, the best vegan protein powders will still have the nine essential amino acids (or some other complete amino acid profile depending on your needs) to build muscle mass or lose body weight.

They will still not include genetically modified organisms and you still need to read the label to determine the amount of protein per serving or whether the branched-chain amino acids also include other essential amino acids that you want in your protein intake or not.  Nothing else has changed.  What homework you would do for whey protein powders, you would do for lactose-free protein powders and what homework you would do for an animal-based protein source you would also do for a plant-based protein powder.

All that we are saying is that the best vegan protein powder is a much better complete protein source than animal protein sources.  Pea protein powders are particularly good (although some people prefer brown rice protein).  Organic pea protein is a lactose-free protein powder but does it taste good?  That is also important.  Having lactose-free protein powders that taste horrible isn't going to help very much.  The best vegan protein powder for you is the one that you actually take regularly.

But the best vegan protein powders do make a great protein shake for example and can put whey protein powder to shame in the taste department.  Whether you prefer a vanilla flavor or strawberry (like me), the issue when it comes to taste (especially in a protein shake) is the creamy texture and flavor that usually comes from the milk ingredients.  That's why some plant-based protein powder options don't taste the same as a whey protein supplement.  The easy solution, of course, is to find that creamy texture and smooth taste by adding almond milk to the mix.

An organic vegan protein source (or other vegan protein supplements) doesn't always need that extra ingredient to help with the taste.  Often the best protein powder and the healthiest protein powder is not just about plant protein versus animal protein but dairy-free or not dairy free.  A good vegan protein powder that is not dairy free already has the taste built in.  So it isn't just about vegan proteins or plant protein in general but about the dairy ingredients.

And it isn't just about protein powders versus a protein supplement.  Some people prefer either an unflavored or vanilla flavor option so that they can create their own flavors with added ingredients in the shake or smoothie.  The protein content is one thing but the protein shakes are another.  Vegan protein sources also taste good in my opinion even without any added ingredients but the taste is a very personal issue for most people.

So, is we focus on the need to identify a good lactose-free protein powder (from brown rice or pea protein and the like) and talk about our protein intake and the amount of protein per serving and the presence or not of branched-chain amino acids and the number of grams of protein per serving, we certainly have a lot to talk about.

Add to that the truth that vegan protein powders are much healthier for most people and that, as far as taste goes, you can either use almond milk or add other ingredients to the mix, and you have a great option when you look at vegan protein powders.  And the amount of protein per serving is quite comparable in a vegan protein powder to other types of protein, so you have the best of both worlds.

With all of that being said, it is now time for us to reveal our top choice in the best vegan protein powder which is also a dairy-free protein powder that tastes great.  Drum roll, please...
